Again, The Idiot Reveals Himself

Donald Drumpf met with Republican Senators today, and once again revealed how really stupid he is.

When Jeff Flake (who I never voted for while I lived in SC, but whom I am starting to have some respect for) introduced himself as "the other senator from Arizona, the one who didn't get captured", Drumpf told Flake "He would not win re-election this November"... to which Flake hilariously responded "I'm not up for re-election".

Donald, study that constitution you so blatantly & repeatedly state you love so much.  Senators have 6 year terms. McCain is up this November, not Flake. Duh.  It's called the 17th Amendment to the US Constitution, you moron:

"The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures."

First 4th of July in N.SD For Us

I just finished hanging up my American Flag outside my home here in N.SD County, for the very first time.  Surrounded by lavender, hibiscus, mandevilla, palm trees, japonica, oleander, humming bird feeders, Allen's & Roufus & Anna's hummingbirds, and flapping gently in the 72F, 5 mph, intermittent breeze 3 miles from the ocean, it struck me as particularly beautiful... even with the gray over-cast sky.


I am appreciative that I live in a country where I can speak English, and not German (link here) - and English is Still spoken around the world by more people than any other language who control more of the world's capital and decisioning making  (even with nearly 1.4 Billion Chinese, not all of whom speak Mandarin), with the most influence internationally;

[I once, while waiting for my company car to pick me up, observed a French business man try and check out of a very poorly run South Korea hotel in Changwon, "Hotel International" - a total pit, very unpleasant, highly NOT recommended for anyone who wants a pleasant stay -  using only French.  The poor man tried and tried, but the hotel clerk just looked blankly back at him, until in broken English, and with great venom & distaste in his pronunciation, he was able to pay his bill and leave the wretched hotel].

I have been able to live & work in multiple states, without the central government approving it (unlike my friends in China, who need central approval to relocate), [link here] going from Indiana, to South Carolina, then back to Indiana, then back to South Carolina 3 years later; then to Arizona for 5, OC California for 2.5, and now Northern San Diego County, where I hope I don't have to move again any time soon.

In this country, I don't have religious fundamentalists telling me how I can dress, what I can eat & drink, and what kind of music I am allowed to play in my home without head phones, like the Basiji do in Iran and the Mutaween do in Saudi Arabia.

In this country I don't have to worry that we are on the brink of national bankruptcy, as the Republicans & many Libertarians kept screaming we were when President Obama took office (yes months earlier, in the same financial conditions under Bush, no one on the right seemed to notice or care about a growing national debt - a debt which the Democrats have once again substantially paid down after the Republicans ran it up... again)... and it is not Greece with radicals on both the left and right rioting in the streets because their government has not had a spine to be able to make any hard choices and implement any austerity effectively for the last 4 bankruptcies.

America has its problems, but it is still a pretty damn good place to live & work and raise a family.  I am grateful to the men & women in the US military who have fought to keep us free, as well as grateful to the Federal leaders (Presidents, Secretaries of State, Senators, etc) who have kept us OUT of wars over the centuries making the spilling of the blood of our military unnecessary (Sorry Lindsey & McCain, we Don't need to bomb Iran and [what's left of] Syria and everywhere else that makes you wet your bed).  It's an English speaking, free movement of labor & capital (relatively, Joe M) =-) , pleasant country where peacocks can picnic wherever they please... "freedom baby, that's what it's all about!" [Freedumb Weekend Aloft, Greenville SC, 1992, yelled by a drunk redneck next to a fully armed A-10 warthog, at Donaldson Center].

Converting Guano Into Something Useful

I voted last Monday via absentee ballot, as I will not be in town next Tuesday to cast my vote locally.  Even though our democracy is extremely flawed, and special interests have bought and sold most politicians and the leadership of both the Democrats and the Republicans, I still feel that if a citizen doesn't vote, then they also need to 'sit down and shut up' if they disagree with anything that their government does, locally, in their state, or in their country.  If they've voted, then they have a voice - even if it is a very quiet one, muffled by millions of dollars of Super-PAC funds and billionaire robber barons who are manipulating the media and the electoral system for their own personal gain or promoting their brand of ideology.

Here in California, there's all sorts of online resources for sample ballots (like this one, here), and how to find out where to vote in your precinct.  Since it's a well funded Blue State (for the most part everywhere except Orange County, apparently) that gives more to the Federal government than it takes from the Feds, and it has a remarkably educated citizenry who are also motivated to try and show that government can do work that promotes the greater good, things tend to "work better here" than they did in Arizona, South Carolina, or Indiana, where Dr Desert Flower and I lived previously over the last 30 years.

But when it comes to the lesser known, "non partisan" races, for school boards, commissions, and judgeships, it is somewhat harder to discern what a candidate stands for, how they might vote, and to whom they owe their allegiances, their moral and political alignment.  Sure, one can individually Google every candidate and thoroughly research each race, but that takes time.

Luckily, one group of very angry, mostly white, mostly very old (retired), highly motivated and very vocal Tea Party affiliated Orange County California residents set up a website that helped guide me as to who I Do Not want to vote for: everyone they've recommended.  (link here) or the long link form, here: http://octeapartyblog.com/oc-tea-party-blog/

It was very handy to see broad generalizations and Made-for-Fox-News hyperbole right there, in black and white, published for all of those devotees who consider guano as one of the 4 basic food groups.  Here are some actual text excerpts from the idealogical (and illogical) page:

Yes, Jerry Brown has an atrocious record.  He's brought the state out of the massively deep fiscal hole Schwarzenegger and the Republicans dug (just like Obama had to with Bush), and successfully launched an expanded California Cares medical website without hiccups (better than the Affordable Care Act did).  He's being a moderate & successful governor....   how atrocious!   Earlier this week, the OC Tea Party website actually called Kashkari a "Liberal Republican candidate" but they've since taken that wording down.  Now they are just urging voters to NOT vote.  Fools.

For Lt Governor, Treasurer, and State Attorney General, same thing:  "No Recommendation" - they hate both the candidates because they are not bat sh*t crazy enough to warrant a Tea Party endorsement.

Then...  for State Controller, they list this gem:

WHAT!?!?!?!  She might compromise, seeking a middle ground, and work across the aisle to get the business of governing done, instead of pouting in her own sand box if she doesn't get her way 100%?  Unimaginable!!!!!

And then, on judges, this bat sh*t site was very useful.  One such example is here:

Don't pay any attention to his legal record, his rulings, jurist prudence, or judgement... none of those things obviously matter if he has all that Obama all over him!!!  Focus only on ideology, and ideology only.  We get our way, or we don't vote!  Or maybe...  we take up those "2nd amendment remedies".  Guano.  Absolutely bat sh*t crazy.

But you know...   I should not be so hard on the OC Tea Party.  I can relate.  When I lived in South Carolina and Arizona, I knew I was always throwing my vote away when I checked the boxes for reasonable candidates who were opposed to Methuselah (McCain) or running against total Flakes, Brewers of terrible beverages, or total anachronisms who soon will be extinct as their telomeres continually shorten.  It's just a matter of time before the OC dinosaurs die out as well.

This video was brought to my attention by my friend John Kress.  It's produced by "Sustainable Man".  Very nice indeed.  Excellent scientific work that went into all of the factual observations, recorded data, and scientific method applied.   (you mean, they didn't just trust in a Bible story for guidance on how to observe the actual changes, over time?)

Whenever I hear a former Wasilla Alaska mayor (a town with NO City Services whatsoever, relying entirely on the county & state to help the citizenery) turned partial single term governor, talk about how she enjoys shooting wolves, I begin to mourn for the loss of insight, the lack of focus on science, and perpetual dumbing down of the United States electorate.  At least she helped prevent a McCain presidency (and a war with Iran that would have resulted)... even if she's really bad at everything else she's tried to do.

If you're afraid of wolves, that's natural for an uninformed human to feel fear of a pack of large predatory carnivores who are poorly understood by most people.  But in the last 100 years in North America, there's been exactly 2 people killed by wolves (link here).  In comparison: "in North America, since 1990, bears (black and grizzly) killed 59 people and cougars killed 11. In the U.S., domestic dogs kill 20 to 30 people every year. And hunters kill nearly 100 people in the U.S. and Canada every year and injure around 1,000."  Appears homo sapiens are still the most lethal species on this planet, after viruses and bacteria (on average).

Comedy Central: A Hit, and a Miss, and a eh, sorta hit

This programming season (whatever the hell that is, now that there's no longer a Spring, Fall or any other TV season), Comedy Central put out three new shows.   The Jeselnick Offensive.  The Ben Show. And Nathan For You.   Jeselnick is abrasive, offensive, harsh, insulting, similar to "The Burn", but more caustic in a sense that Don Rickels would be proud.  Jeselnick is VERY cocky - "Welcome to another perfect show".  And he thinks he's better than he is, but he is very funny.

The Ben Show, is just dumb.  It's random, and has people read things off of papers handed to them out of the blue.   It has stupid rap liaisons and vignettes that appeal to those who like Workaholics and other inane shows.  Dr Desert Flower and I tried to watch it, and were annoyed.   We will not be watching it again and wasting another minute of our lives.  We are not the target audience, obviously, and I hope The Ben Show goes away quickly.

Nathan For You is a mixed bag.  Partly funny, partly painful, he sometimes beats a dead horse way more than SNL could ever beat a dead horse.  I don't think painful comedy is funny, I just see it as painful and hard to watch.  When Nathan is on his game, he's very funny.   When he's pummeling a premise and painfully trying to guide someone he is "helping" it is more than cringe-worthy, it is just wrong and painful.

So Viacom has a mixed bag.  One very funny, very caustic, very intelligent show - The Jeselnick Offensive.  One dud aimed at duds - The Ben Show.  One mixed bag - Nathan For You.

From the Comedy Central commercials I was forced to watch in the gym this evening, without a DVR, I see that Gabriel Inglaises (Fluffy) is coming back, and he is very very funny.

Good Luck Jonathan With Your New Nigerian Civil War

Nigeria, where it's estimated that there's as much oil under the ground as Iraq or Iran have, is quickly spiraling into a Muslim-Christian civil war.  1000s of people are fleeing their homes to escape the religiously motivated genocidal killings.  Muslims insurgents are claiming that Christian insurgents killed and then ate (as in cannibals, link here) the Muslim corpses.  Goodluck Jonathan, the "popularly elected" president (but a well connected crony in his own right), cut off government fuel subsidy payments last week to the country's rich plutocrat run gasoline companies who have gone on to pass massive price hikes onto consumers or shut down their gas stations altogether, bringing the economy to a halt, costing 2 Billion dollars in just the last week.(link here)

It will be interesting to see how the White House and State Department handles this, since a HUGE amount of Nigerian oil and natural gas flows to the Oil addicted USA.  If we had President McCain or President Palin in office, I would NOT be surprised to see US air strikes against the "Muslim rebels" or US Special Forces getting engaged on the ground as manipulated tools of the Goodluck Jonathan central government. 

We shall see.

McCain: Get Off My Bus!

My Senior Senator is having more and more "senior moments".  Today, John McCain went on a rant on the floor of the Senate about how ugly President Obama's bus is, and how terrible it is that it was made in Canada.  Sure, Prevost does have a plant in Quebec that makes fine bus shells.  They manufacture them for alot of people.  The presidential bus's shell was made there too, and then finished in Tennessee.  I think Tennessee is in America, isn't it?

I guess attacking a campaign bus choice without the facts is what someone does when they are trying to create a distraction and stall for time.  When the Democrats are pushing for jobs bills and financial reform, the Republicans are busy voting to ban abortions in emergency rooms and criticizing presidential buses.

Vice Presidents Huckabee & Brownback

Had John McCain picked someone electable for his running mate, I am NOT SURE that Barack Obama would have been elected president.  Huckabee actually won several state primaries and caucuses.  Brownback would have appealed to all the evangelicals and extreme right wingers who eventually became Tea Baggers.  Both Brownback and Huckabee would have energized their bases and might have gotten the more reasonable right wing to go out and vote.  Instead, McCain made the fatal flaw of picking a 1/2 term Governor, who had formerly been a mayor of a 2000 person rural city where there were no city services provided, a city known as the crack capital of Alaska.  The VP candidate he picked galvanized opposition from literate, intelligent, reasonable people, like librarians, teachers, professional females with college degrees of all sorts, moderates of all shapes and sizes.

I postulate here, as I watch the circular firing squad that the Republican Primary field of 2012 is presenting, that it was McCain's choice of Palin that sealed his fate as an unelectable moderate Republican.  McCain was the least undesirable of Republican candidates in 2008.  Yes, he had some terrible flip flops, lapses in judgments, and mis-statements, but he never believed Barack Obama was a secret Muslim, or that Barack Obama was not patriotic or that he hated America.  McCain corrected ignorant supporters who called then-candidate Obama a 'socialist' and 'secret Muslim' at his rallies.  Compared to the 2012 field of loons who are running, McCain presented a very reasonable choice.

Huntsman is reasonable, and therefore, in 2012, he will be unelectable.  Romney, though easily despised, completely artificial, and slippery enough to do ANYTHING to get people to like him, is still less electable today than McCain was in 2008.  Front runners Paul, Bachmann, and Dick Perry are each to the right of most of the wackiest 2008 candidates (with Perry again today, denying climate change, and wanting to abolish 80% of all Federal Revenue by abolishing Federal Income Tax, what an idiot!). 

There is the possibility that the GOP will come up with a reasonable candidate who can appeal to moderates and independents, but so far, no such person has shown his (or her) face or raised their hand.  Whoever that reasonable person Might be, will have their pick of extremist Tea Party courtiers who they can choose as a VP running mate.  Maybe they'll repeat McCain's fatal flaw of picking a loser who will seal their fate against the incumbent President.  Maybe they'll learn from previous history...  I dunno.

There is also the possibility that the GOP will field a reasonable (yet un-named candidate), AND the Tea Party crazed faction of the far right wing will field their own Tea Party Candidate as well, splitting the vote in a 3-way, 1992 Perot/Bush/Clinton-esque race (Perot was from Texas also).  There's not predicting what crazy people might do. 

And yes, I know that the Republicans are going to do everything in their power (in the majority in House of Representatives, and as the LARGE Minority in the Senate, and as rulers of the SCOTUS) to make things as bad as possible for all Americans leading up the November 2012 elections, saying "NO" to everything, not compromising on anything, and redefining the word "Despicable" ... but there's nothing we, as a nation, can do about it.   At least, not without a TARDIS.

McCain Learns Arabic In One Day!

John "get off my lawn / immigration fence" McCain, my state's senior U.S. senator, has apparently learned how to speak nuanced Arabic in one day, studied Libyan culture and ethnic tribal groups (perhaps on the flight over?), and has come to the informed conclusion, that the rebels fighting against the oppressive Qaddafi regime are "Not Al Qaeda" (link here).  Bravo John McCain!   I thought I was good with languages and understanding other cultures, but your quick study and astute observations, to come to such a strong and resounding conclusion, even calling your nation's government to acknowledge the rebels as the legitimate government of Libya, your broadly publicized statements put my meager abilities to shame.  I'd never be able to conclude that a non-heterogeneous population of tribal peoples who have a hatred of imperial western powers, speaking various dialects I could not understand, who were enthusiastically welcoming me with jubilation, had any hidden agendas whatsoever in the space of meeting them for less than one day.

Yes, Qaddafi is an evil man, a very bad guy, who has overtly killed and tortured thousands of his own people, paid terrorists to attack his enemies (the US included), supplied more suicide bombers and insurgents to Iraq than any other single nation (mostly from the... um...   East of Libya). Hmmm... maybe McCain will flip flop on this one, as he has on so many other things (link here).

I wonder if he's gonna pick up any Burber rugs while he is there, for his friend Lindsey Graham (link here).  Lindsey is an astute observer of foreign affairs who comes to sound conclusions ("I bought 5 rugs today for 5 bucks!"), or his fellow party member Mike "Iraq is like an Indiana Market in the Summer Time" Pence.

Rodney Glassman's Smooth Responses

Listening to KJZZ's Here and Now this morning, Steve Goldstein interviewed Rodney Glassman, the Democratic candidate for US Senator who will be up against not-a-maverick John McCain in November. Wow! Mr Glassman can deliver a smooth, Arizona-centric, fact-filled response to every question Goldstein or callers pose to him. The man speaks very well - as an Air Force JAG lawyer, it's part of his job to speak well... but he certainly had me smiling on his succinct, direct, critical-of-McCain comments.

There's so many older, retired, red-staters in Arizona, that angry old sore loser McCain will probably remain in his senate seat, but I hope Glassman makes a strong showing. This guy's good.

A Delicious Arizonan "Tool-ed up" Wine

Dr.Desert Flower and I went out for a nice company sponsored Christmas dinner last Friday night, to a nice all organic, locally grown, sustainable restaurant called Quiessence in South Phoenix. The food was ok, cheese was great, service was slow (3 hours that easily could have been 90 minutes) but much to our my surprise and delight, the wine list included a 2007 Arizona Stronghold "Mangus". The blend of 43% Sangiovese, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Pfeffer, 3% Petite Sirah, made in SE Arizona, was delicious. Tool & A Perfect Circle lead man Maynard James Keenan and winemaker Eric Glomski are the driving force behind Stronghold, an expansion on Keenan's already established Caduceus Cellars, north of Phoenix (near Senator McCain's ranch in Page Springs). The Phoenix New Times had an excellent article on Keenan and his passion for wine: (from Page 4)
"Keenan turns grouchy when he talks about the music industry, and the expectations people put on him as a songwriter, as if his lyrics can heal them — let alone himself. "If these songs are so cathartic, then shouldn't I should be fat and happy now? If it doesn't help me and I don't move on, how is that gonna help you?"" ... And I thought Sedona was just for 'aging hippie liberal douches', crystal worshipers, naive vacationers with more money than sense, and vortex seekers. Who knew that just south of it, excellent wine is being made!

I was listening to Bill Moyers today on NPR's Fresh Air, when he said "McCain appeared to be pinched as he courted the fundamentalist religious right, the same group who successfully destroyed his 2000 campaign. ...He was making his bed with porcupines." I laughed so hard.. it's so true. Had McCain not courted the religious right, and allied himself with W early on, and not picked Palin, and been more 2000ish and less 2008ish in his bizarre inconsistencies... he probably would have won. Hell, I voted for him in the failed SC primary in 2000.

Crooks and Liars has this awesome little tid-bit from this morning's talk shows. Clips of McCain supporting exactly, word for word, what Obama's tax plan is, back in 2006 and 2002. In research reminiscent of Russert's fastidiousness, Brokaw then faces McCain on Reagan's tax record... beautiful!
